The
city of Bikaner was founded in 1488 AD by the
Rajput prince Rao Bikaji, a descendent of the Rao Jodhaji.
Archeological excavations carried out in this region
have suggested that this place was inhabited even prior
to the Harappa period. Bikaner was a major trade center
on the old caravan route linking Central Asia and North
India with the Gujarat seaports. Bikaner is more popularly
called the Camel Country.
The first thing to see on holiday in Bikaner is the
Junagarh Fort. The Mughal General Raja Jai Singh
constructed the fort between 1588 AD to 1593 AD. Also
visit the Lal Garh Fort, which houses the Shri Sadul
Museum on the first floor.
Visit the Sisodia Rani ka Bagh on holiday in
Bikaner to see the enchanting garden palace built by
Jai Singh for his second wife. Numerous beautiful tiered
gardens with small hills, streams and pavilions ornamented
with murals will enthrall your heart.
Not to visit the Camel Research Farm in the
Camel Country would be a waste of holiday in Bikaner.
It is a government-run camel farm and probably one of
its kind in entire Asia. Three different breeds are
reared here and about 230 camels are at the Farm. Enjoy
a camel ride, cuddle the baby camels and explore the
smallmuseum.
The other places to visit on holiday in Bikaner are
Bhandsar Temple, Shiva Bh ari Temple, Sisodia Rani ka
Bagh and Gaitor.
